Paint Finish Types, Their Differences, and the Best Rooms for Them
Matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss paint finishes are all different and work better in certain rooms than others. Find out their differences and where to use them below.

“Our bathroom wall paint is already bubbling up! What went wrong?!” Stephanie hisses angrily. David frowns as he traces the peeling paint with a finger. “You know, I’m not 100% sure but I think we may have used the wrong type of paint finish,” he thinks aloud.
Stephanie sighs and rubs her forehead. “Well, that’s the best theory we have yet, so let’s look into it. I’d rather not bring a painting contractor out here just to tell us the answer. I’ll look up interior painting costs while you cover this.” The couple gets out their phones and starts searching on Google.

Paint Finish Types And Their Differences
Paint finishes differ due to shininess and durability. In order of shininess, the different types of paint finishes are matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. Each one works best in a certain room, though that doesn’t mean you have to use them there.
The Rooms Where These Finishes Shine
Matte, also known as flat, finishes aren’t shiny. It absorbs a lot of the light that falls on it, making it great for hiding imperfections. This makes it great for low traffic rooms like home offices and adult bedrooms. Matte finishes aren’t very durable, though. You’ll want to be careful cleaning it because it damages easily.
Eggshell finishes are flat with a little bit of a shine to it, like looking at a chicken egg. It hides imperfections pretty well and cleans more easily than matte. This is a great paint finish for dining and living rooms.
Satin finishes have a sort of velvety look to it. It’s shiny which means it looks good but imperfections in the wall can be seen more cleanly. Brushstrokes and roller lines can show up more easily too. It’s great for hallways and family rooms.
Semi-gloss finishes are great because they’re durable and have a pretty shine. They can stand up well to heat and moisture which is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
Glossy finishes are very shiny, which isn’t great for walls. All the imperfections on a wall will show through. But, glossy paints are great for kitchen cabinets!
